Hey everyone this is episode eleven. And in this episode we're going to talk a little bit about how I am getting my MBA in health care management along with my medical degree in osteopathic medicine. I get a lot of questions about this and I know that may be in video form you guys aren't really getting the answers or sometimes I've answered it on Instagram and maybe it's not clear because I'm still getting questions on how I balance this and I wanted to talk a little bit about how it's very manageable if you get a masters degree very part time while you're in medical school I will say like sometimes it got a lot when it came to exams coming up or finals weeks lining up but at the end of the day if you're only taking one to two classes per semester if your school allows that then it is manageable.

I mostly took one class per semester and there were only like summer terms where I would take two classes per semester because I was not in medical school for that for that entire summer term. So that's pretty much how I balanced it. I started my MBA right after I graduated college. My university was offering this MBA for a scholarship and if you had a three-point five or higher GPA after submitting your application and writing some essays the school decided that they were going to give me a full scholarship for this Masters so is it even harder to give up after seeing that.

So that's when I started I started in 2018 and it's now 2020 and I still have not completed my master's because again like it's part time and I am actually currently taking a leave of absence just because there are a specific number of semesters I was given to complete my MBA for free and I was about to run out of those semesters because I was only taking one class mostly person master so now I'm taking a leave of absence and I will start my MBA up again to finish it next year after I take my step one exam so I will have more time hopefully to take more than one class I'll probably end up taking three classes per semester just to finish up my degree once I'm in third year and I start rotations. It's still a lot to take on but at least I won't be worrying about my exam scores as much or my studying as much and my U.S. MLE step one score. So that's kind of the process I took in terms of doing this if I didn't make it clear in the beginning it is online so I don't have to go anywhere to attend my MBA classes and I will say there are a lot of pros and cons to taking online classes. So one of the big pros of course is you know you can take this class from home.

You can do it along with either you know a full time job a part time job or if you're in school or you want to go to medical school and you want to get a master's you know you can do that and you can take your MBA classes or whatever masters classes from home and that's great. But the major con to it is it's a lot less engaging. So I. Everyone's different so I personally feel like an online class for me is less engaging. Whereas you might feel that you learn a lot better from an online class and that's great. But I felt like all I kind of try to do is complete my discussion posts and my main goal for the week is to get my discussion post done for one it's due like usually it's due Thursday by midnight. Sometimes I have an essay here and there. Most of the time I have like quizzes and open book tests so I find myself just like checking off a list and trying to get these things done. And just trying to pass the course whereas I feel like I'm not really putting in the time to really learn every single thing that my professors put up and read every single article because at the end of the day I am not I don't they don't hold me accountable for it, outside of open-book quizzes and tests and just writing a discussion post here and there so I find that to be the biggest flaw in my learning style when it comes to online classes. Now this doesn't mean that I don't want to get the most out of my MBA which is why I want to just like reiterate and say I am taking a leave of absence not only for the reason that I'm running out of my semesters but I also just can't give it the attention that it needs because I've been really busy studying for school and preparing for Step 1 exams.

So that's just kind of exactly what my story is when it came to getting my MBA and I'm going to finish off this episode by talking a little bit about why I wanted to get an MBA and health care management.

So there is absolutely no way that I know what all the avenues are that I can take with this degree but I do want to have some kind of if not managerial role or like chief operating role I do want to be able to at least have a degree by my name that shows people that I did receive an education and how to manage people in health care because I will be working in a hospital and if there's any chance that I can manage either clinical trials or teams in a hospital setting or in a clinical setting I would love to have a role in that because I've always really liked leadership and that's kind of why I wanted to go with the MBA in health care management route. It's very specific to health care settings which is where I'm going to be for the rest of my life. So that's where that came from it also came from thinking like oh if I ever want to open up my own practice one day as a practicing physician having my MBA probably gives me some credibility to do that. So those are just some things that went through my mind. You know you might have different reasons for pursuing an MBA or you might want to pursue a master's in public health. There are also medical schools that allow you to get your MBA so you don't have to do it from the college you're graduating from. Again like I want to say I got lucky that my college MCPHS University in Boston offered this scholarship to get your masters for free online. So not every college is going to offer that but if you guys are interested there are some medical schools that allow you to do dual degrees. And I think those usually start after your second year your third you would complete your masters your third or fourth year. So definitely look into that if you are applying to medical schools or if you're in medical school right now and you're interested.

See if your school offers that but that's pretty much it you guys if you enjoy this podcast and learned anything from it I would really appreciate if you could leave a review. I read them all and they mean a lot to me and they keep me going. Other than not stay tuned I release episodes every Monday Wednesday and Friday and I'll catch you in the next one.
